Interns at Utne Reader:

Chelsey Perkins spent her formative years in Crosslake, a small town in the Minnesota north woods. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism and a minor in social justice. When she’s not immersed in the indie press, Chelsey loves to write, debate, try new recipes, and play with her infinitely entertaining cat, Myrtle.

Rachel Levitt grew up in Fargo and graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in English and French. She recently completed a year teaching English in France and is ecstatic to be back in the Twin Cities. She loves cooking, live music, crossword puzzles, and classic television shows.

Kari Volkmann-Carlsen graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in English. She also works for Voyageurs National Park Association as the advancement associate, and maintains a blog called Notes on the Written World for bibliophiles like herself. She is fluent in Norwegian, but she doesn’t say “uff-da.”

Emily Garber recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in journalism and cultural studies. Besides perusing Utne’s sprawling library, Emily keeps busy by coordinating volunteers for the Minnesota Fringe Festival, riding around town on a splatter-painted ten speed, and scratching her two pet rats behind their ears.

Jake Mohan grew up in Grinnell, Iowa, attended Lawrence University in Wisconsin, and earned an MFA in nonfiction writing at the University of Minnesota. He lives in constant fear of carpal tunnel syndrome triggered either by countless hours at his computer keyboard or by his other life as a drummer in a series of earnest, fledgling rock bands.

Cally Carswell made her way to the Twin Cities after studying all-things-radio at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. Her trusty liberal arts degree from the University of Wisconsin has taken her to Chicago, Colorado, Maine, and Minneapolis, where she’s worked in public radio, nonprofit communications, and, of course, as a waitress.
