Café Utne
Copyright Policy
The content of the Café is intended for use only by registered users. All content published at the Café is protected by copyright, and is owned and controlled by the publisher or Utne Reader. The Utne Reader and Café Utne will NOT re-publish Café content without the expressed permission of the original author. Participants shall abide by all copyright notices, information and restrictions contained in any content accessed through the Café.
Patrons grant to Café Utne the right to transmit, display, copy, reproduce and distribute within forums at the Café any content or other information provided by patrons for display within a public forum at the Café.
Café Utne is protected by copyright as a collective work and/or compilation pursuant to U.S. copyright laws, international conventions and other copyright laws. Patrons may not modify, publish, transmit, participate in the transfer or sale of, copy, reproduce, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, display or in any way exploit, any content in whole or in part except as specifically permitted.
Nothing herein is intended to restrict in any way what a patron can do with what s/he has written and posted to Café Utne.
You may download or copy the content posted at the Café for personal use only. Copying, storing or displaying any content for other than personal use is expressly prohibited without prior written permission from Utne Reader, the content publisher or the copyright holder identified in the content's copyright notice, which consent may be withheld for any reason. In essense, if you didn't write it, and you want to reproduce it, ask the author.
When quoting articles in Café postings, patrons should use one or two explanatory lines from the article and then post a link to the article itself. Material from books should be paraphrased and the name and author of the book cited so people can obtain the information directly from the source if they wish. Copyright laws are in flux with regard to the internet, and Utne chooses to err on the side of author's rights in its copyright policy. To that end, Café Utne may, without prior notice to patrons, revoke access to posted items which UR reasonably believes violate any applicable law, rule or regulation or do not comply with Café User Guidelines or Copyright policy. Posting unauthorized copies of copyrighted items is prohibited by law and could result in liability for copyright infringement. Neither UR nor any of its officers, directors, employees or hosts shall have any liability to patrons for any action taken in good faith by such person in this regard.
Using your Café Utne account for illegal activity under the laws of Minnesota and the United States is a violation of this agreement. Since the law as to jurisdiction of online systems is unsettled, we urge you to consider the possible effect of laws outside the Café's locality or your own residence. The Café is open to members worldwide, and cannot guarantee that you won't run into legal trouble from other jurisdictions over your works.
Your use of the Café is subject to compliance with all applicable local, state, federal and international laws, rules and regulations and Café Utne's User Guidelines. Café Utne's current User Guidelines are subject to change at any time. Use of the Café after any changes are posted shall constitute your acceptance of the change.
Welcome to the Café Utne community. We hope you enjoy your time here!
