The Hole Story
(Cinema Libre Studio; on DVD)
November / December 2007
Kristen Mueller
When a mile-long “black hole” of open water mysteriously appears on a Minnesota lake in the depths of winter, aspiring TV producer Alex Karpovsky flies a film crew to the backwoods town of Brainerd, hoping to cash in on the phenomenon by making it the subject of an Unsolved Mysteries knockoff titled Provincial Puzzlers. By the time Karpovsky touches down, though, the lake has frozen solid, leaving one cameraman to turn his lens on the wannabe star as he cracks up in the face of failure. What ensues is The Hole Story, a mockumentary about Karpovsky’s attempt to forge a documentary about a riddle that’s hiding below three feet of ice, replete with reality TV–style confessionals and Real World–worthy mental breakdowns.
