An Iranian Prostitute?s Electronic Plea

Article Tools

Reporting for Pacificnews.org, Behrouz Saba describes the plight of an Iranian woman named Sanaz, who keeps a weblog called Fahesheh, the Farsi word for ?prostitute.? The blog contains a link to an interview Sanaz gave the Farsi service of Radio Sweden, in which she paints a picture of ?an Iran where living is all but unaffordable for most people, officials high and low are irredeemably corrupt, heroin is cheap and widely available, and even married women sometimes sell themselves to feed their families.? If a single woman requests welfare in Iran, she is given the equivalent of $7.50 per month, about enough money to buy only two kilos of meat. When arrested for prostitution, young women are usually required to spend the night in bed with the arresting officer and are also recruited by the police for the clergy, who sometimes torture prostitutes before releasing them. Whether or not the United States intervenes to install regime change, Saba writes, ?young, bright and increasingly emboldened students are planning the downfall of the ayatollahs their own way.?
